Topson
Topias Miikka Taavitsainen
Biography
Topias "Topson" Taavitsainen is a Finnish esports legend who revolutionized Dota 2 with his unorthodox playstyle and incredible mechanical skill. Born on April 14, 1998, in Haukipudas, Finland, Topson grew up as one of eleven siblings, with seven older and four younger brothers and sisters. His journey into Dota 2 began at the age of 8 when his brothers encouraged him to try the game, setting the foundation for what would become one of the most remarkable careers in esports history.
Topson's professional career began in 2017 with brief stints at SFTe-sports and 5 Anchors No Captain, but his breakthrough came when he represented Finland at WESG 2017. His exceptional performance in public matchmaking caught the attention of OG, one of Dota 2's most prestigious organizations. In June 2018, OG announced Topson as their new midlaner just before The International 2018 regional qualifiers, a decision that would change the course of competitive Dota 2.
Despite entering The International 2018 as underdogs, Topson and OG defied all expectations by winning the tournament, defeating PSG.LGD in a thrilling 3-2 grand final. This victory established Topson as a legitimate professional player and marked the beginning of his legendary status. However, it was the following year that cemented his place in Dota 2 history.
At The International 2019, Topson achieved what no other player had ever done before - winning back-to-back International titles. Alongside teammates N0tail, Ceb, ana, and JerAx, OG once again lifted the Aegis of Champions after defeating Team Liquid 3-1 in the finals. This historic achievement made Topson the first player to win two consecutive TI titles, earning him the nickname "The Aegis Collector" and establishing him as one of the greatest mid laners in Dota 2 history.
Topson's playstyle is characterized by his exceptional mechanical skill, particularly with heroes like Puck, Meepo, and Ember Spirit. His ability to consistently outplay opponents in one-on-one scenarios and his creative approach to the game have made him a fan favorite and a nightmare for opposing teams. Known for his unpredictable item builds and unconventional strategies, Topson often forces opponents to adapt to his playstyle rather than the other way around.
After his historic TI9 victory, Topson took a break from competitive play following OG's 7th-8th place finish at The International 2021. He returned briefly to play for T1 as a stand-in during The International 2022 qualifiers and later formed Old G with former teammates Ceb and N0tail, though the team failed to qualify for Division 1. His final professional chapter came with Tundra Esports, where he replaced Saksa due to health reasons and competed at The International 2023.
On September 24, 2024, Tundra Esports announced Topson's retirement from competitive Dota 2, marking the end of an era. In January 2025, he began his mandatory Finnish military service, closing the book on one of the most successful careers in esports history. Throughout his career, Topson earned over $5.8 million in prize money and achieved a 100% win rate at The International, winning both times he qualified.
Beyond his competitive achievements, Topson is known for his humble personality and his journey from pub star to international champion. He studied to become a chef before quitting to focus on Dota 2 full-time, a decision that has inspired countless aspiring players. His story represents the ultimate underdog narrative - a player who rose from the public matchmaking scene to become one of the most decorated and respected figures in Dota 2 history.
